Twitter turns seven this year – if it were a dog, it’d be 49; if it were a person, it’d be a second-grader. But it’s neither of those things – it’s Twitter, that hashtagging blue bird that’s got everyone talking – in 14o characters or fewer.
In some ways, it seems like it’s been around forever since that little blue bird is so ubiquitous. Hashtags abound, now pervading into everyday speech.
Thanks, Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake for letting us know how we sound when we incorporate hashtags into spoken communication. Television commercials flash hashtags for the product so consumers can interact with the brand in real-time.
Dashburst compiled some amazing stats into a handy-dandy infographic (click to view). We’ll dissect a few here.
I bet you’d believe that tweets with photos receive twice the rate of interaction that text-only tweets receive. People respond and engage with images, and smart Twitter users know that. They capitalize on it!
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the majority of Twitter users (80%) are accessing the platform via mobile. The world’s gone mobile, so all social platforms that want to keep up need to be mobile before it’s cool. Twitter’s definitely stayed ahead of the curve in that regard, making its mobile app incredibly user-friendly.
Smart brands – celebrities included – use Twitter to engage with fans and consumers. Most brands have multiple handles, allowing them to target their engagement and spread their nets wider. Justin Bieber is the most followed celebrity on Twitter. I guess 45 million Beliebers really need to know what the pop star is thinking at any given moment. Who can resist the introspective thoughts of one of today’s brightest stars? Raise your hand if you’re a Belieber – it’s okay, we don’t judge here.
Think you’re a Twitter superuser? Guess again – the user who holds the Most Frequent Tweeter trophy goes to user _NECRO_ with over 6 million tweets. On that note, users spend an average of 170 minutes a month flinging their 140 character thoughts into the internet’s abyss. Those tweets make connections, however – the average user has about 200 followers.
How do you stack up on Twitter? Are you a superuser? A dabbling dilettante? Sound off and let us know how you feel about it!
