Back in 2010 when social media marketing was still in its infancy our VIP Content Head Felicity Armand rounded up more than 20 social media stats that gave an overview of how the industry was progressing.
Since then Felicity has emigrated to LA and these stats have become somewhat less mind-blowing as people now accept that social media is a massive industry.
Even so it’s still interesting to take a stroll down memory lane and revisit these statistics to see the extent to which social media usage has changed in the past three years.
So, here they are:
1. Twitter had 75m user accounts…
…of which only around 15m were active users on a regular basis.
Now: Twitter has 883m user accounts and 232m monthly active users.
2. LinkedIn had more than 50m members worldwide.
Now: LinkedIn has 259m members after increasing its user base by 40% in a year.
3. Facebook had 350m monthly active users.
Now: Facebook has 1.19bn monthly active users.
4. 50% of active users logged into Facebook each day.
This meant at least 175m users every 24 hours.
Now: Facebook claims to have 727m active daily users, meaning that 61% of users log on every day (if my math is correct…).
5. Flickr hosted more than 4bn images.
Now: Flickr now has competition from a wide range of different social networks such as Facebook and Instagram. There are no official statistics as to the number of images that it hosts but one estimate puts it at close to 8bn.
6. Wikipedia had 14m articles and 85,000 contributors.
7. 65m users accessed Facebook through mobile devices.
Now: 874m monthly active users who used Facebook mobile products as of September 30 2013.
8. There were more than 3.5bn pieces of content shared each week on Facebook.
Now: There are 33.25bn pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, etc.) shared every week.
9. There were 11m LinkedIn users across Europe.
Now: LinkedIn has more than 57m European members and more than 74m across EMEA.
10. The average number of tweets per day was more than 27m.
Now: As of August 2013 Twitter users were posting around 500m tweets per day, which means about 5,700 tweets a second.
11. The average number of tweets per hour was around 1.3m.
Now: Twitter users now crank out around 20.8m tweets per hour.

And following Felicity’s formula, here are nine other interesting social stats…
- More than 1bn unique users visit YouTube each month.
- 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.
- Mobile makes up more than 25% of YouTube’s global watch time, more than 1bn views a day.
- LinkedIn counts executives from all 2013 Fortune 500 companies as members; its corporate talent solutions are used by 91 of the Fortune 100 companies.
- More than 3m companies have LinkedIn Company Pages.
- Pinterest has 70m users worldwide.
- 85% of Pinterest’s unique users are mobile only.
- Facebook currently hosts 250bn photos.
The average Facebook user spends more than 8.3 hours on the site per month.
